I&C Project Engineer

Job Description:

  • The candidate will fill a position as an I&C Project Engineer.
  • This role works with a cross-functional team of station stakeholders, project leads, and project managers to evaluate modifications to the plant design.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and/or preparing engineering products (e.g., Design / Engineering Change packages, Specifications, Calculations, Technical Evaluations.)
  • Overseeing contracted engineering work and ensuring consistency and compliance with client and industry standards.
  • Providing technical support, input, and oversight for Factory and Site Acceptance Testing and Simulations (e.g., reviewing and approving procedures and observing activities).
  • Interfacing with the primary equipment supplier and project stakeholders to support technical reviews and input.
  • Analyzing engineering risk and failure modes and incorporating mitigating strategies in the designs.
  • Reporting and presenting status to engineering team lead, project managers, and management team on a periodic basis.
  • Supporting construction / implementation phase (e.g., design updates, field change evaluations, resolution of technical issues).

Required Skills:

  • Experience with nuclear power plant design, systems, and components
  • Strong background in Electrical, Computer, or I&C Engineering fields
  • Specification, technical, engineering writing ability

Preferred Skills:

  • Nuclear Operations experience (SRO/STA)
  • 50.59 (or equivalent)
  • Standard Design Process qualification for Nuclear Engineering Changes
  • Engineering specification qualification
  • Candidates will be expected to have or gain familiarity with the nuclear power plant design, including the Electrical Distribution System and or the Instrumentation and Control Systems at the station.
  • Experience with Industrial Control Systems such as Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and/or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems and associated control system devices, computers, communications, and networks
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with power generation Industrial Control Systems and skills in the use of advanced control techniques;
  • In-depth knowledge of industry advances in control system monitoring, testing and analysis of control equipment; and controls theory;
  • Knowledge and experience of power plant controls, steam turbine control systems, combustion turbine control systems, balance of plant control systems;
  • Knowledge and experience of electrical and electronics theory;

Preferred Years of Experience:

  • 6+ years of directly-related electrical power design engineering experience in a power generating station, nuclear background strongly preferred
  • 10+ years of industry experience

Education:

  • Possess a 4-year Electrical Engineering Degree or equivalent extensive electrical engineering field experience.
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license can be used in lieu of a 4-year degree

Senior Digital I&C Instructor

Job Description:

  • Develop instructional materials and conduct training for the INPO Accredited I&C technical training program at Surry nuclear power station.
  • A candidate for this position should have in-depth knowledge of INPO accredited instructional design theory as well as in-depth expertise in Digital Control Server Systems (DCS) based digital I&C equipment for which he or she will develop and deliver training.
  • This person will develop and deliver training on the most complex topics and is responsible for analyzing, designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating training in the classroom, laboratory, and on-the-job.
  • This individual is responsible for maintaining training programs in accordance with nuclear industry, regulatory, institutions, and legal requirements.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Preferred Licenses, Certifications, Qualifications or Standards:

  • Nuclear I&C training instructor within a INPO Accredited training program
  • SRO Instructor Certification
  • I&C Digital Technician, or Digital Instrument Engineer
  • Other:
  • Reactor Operator (RO) or Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license or applicable discipline INPO accredited initial training program or Certified Instructor meets ANS 3.1 12/79, (Section 4.4.7.2)

Required Skills:

  • The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences that are required for entry into this job include the following:
  • MUST have In depth knowledge of INPO Accredited Instructional theory, design, and SAT process.
  • MUST have previous experience working with Westinghouse/Emerson Ovation and/or Common-Q DI&C platforms
  • 12 + years of related experience OR 5 or more years of experience in DCS based digital I&C
  • Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication, good personal computer, operate various instrumentation and controls, problem solving.
  • Abilities: Analyze and develop training materials, train and lead others, interface with regulatory personnel and industry peers, informal leadership skills, ability to effectively communicate with regulators.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to lead, collaborate, or work effectively in a variety of teams, including multi-disciplinary teams

Nice to Have Skills:

  • Preferred experience utilizing Vision or equivalent training material development software
  • Experience in the I&C maintenance shop who has actually been a doer has done the work they are training
  • Experience in training for Westinghouse 3 loop PWR

Required Experience:

  • 12 + years of related experience OR;
  • 5 or more years of experience in DCS or PLC based digital I&C
  • Ideal candidate is someone from the nuclear industry

Education (Minimum Requirements):

  • BS Degree or an equivalent combination of demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:
  • Bachelor Science – Physical Science, Technology, Mathematics, or Engineering
