Our Operations Team Is Growing!

Our new Payroll & Benefits Administrator, Colin Shomo, was born and raised in West Virginia.

He joined the Navy in 2011 as a Personnel Specialist, providing payroll support to 5,000 sailors while on deployment. This role endeared itself to Colin, as he saw first-hand how the work helped and impacted his shipmates.

In 2015, he exited the service after satisfying his initial contract and moved to Richmond to further his education. He later began working at Dominion Payroll, where he provided support for the company’s many clients.

In his spare time, Colin enjoys reading poetry, thinking about food, and anticipating the day when he can safely visit his friends in New York!

Life Is Sweet!

With the pandemic dragging along, many of us are searching for new ways to boost our mood. Our Corporate Communications Specialist, Tianna, took a shot at a virtual baking class to brighten her day!

The webinar featured Chef Dana Herbert, a well-respected culinary expert who won the first season of Cake Boss: The Next Great Baker! He led the bakers through the steps to make homemade Strawberry Shortcake.

The event was a fun, relaxing way to relieve some stress and enjoy a sweet treat.

Meet Our Returning Senior Recruiter

Kelly James is a returning Astyra family member who is joining us as a Senior Recruiter!

Kelly was born and raised in Portsmouth, VA before heading to Hampton University where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Marketing.

After graduating and completing an internship with the Governor’s office, she earned a position with us as a Junior Recruiter. Soon after, Kelly was offered a recruiting position in Chicago for a major pharmaceutical company.

After six years in Chicago, Kelly returned to Richmond more prepared to source and hire candidates for us!

Women’s History Month at Astyra

Our Astyra ladies.

Women’s History Month is a time to honor and celebrate women who have made an impact to society through their words and/or actions. While we’re extremely grateful for the many women who have paved the way and allowed us the right to work especially in an office together, we want to recognize our own Astyra women.

We each bring a different skillset, personality and outlook to our work in a way that creatively designs how our our office runs. We work hard and play harder. However, two of our most influential women have been at Astyra for over a decade now and it’s likely that you’ll recognize their names.

For the past 13 years, our Vice President of Operations, Melissa, has dedicated her efforts to managing our Human Resources department throughout her various roles. She has trained many current and past employees, acted as the mediator for Astyra and other companies and done everything operations related that you can imagine!

Our Account Manager, Mary Alice, has been with us for 11 years and juggled multiple positions. She has worked as our front desk office admin, managed some Information Technology tasks and now connects us with companies throughout the United States!

We’re happy to have these two and the rest of our Astyra ladies on our team. We hope to continue to enjoy all that they have to offer!

Who is a woman that you think deserves recognition this month and why? We’d love to hear about other women making a difference!
