Senior Safety Specialist (Gen)

1-year contract position – Option to extend based on performance/project need

Primary Location of assignment:
Powhatan, Virginia
Chesterfield, Virginia
Danville, Virginia
Flexible Western Virginia near Lynchburg, VA This position will be a roamer for project closeout.

*MUST live 50+ miles from the site to qualify for per diem

No Mob/Demob

Travel: Occasionally between locations as needed for projects
Schedule: Flexible schedule but the primary schedule will be 5x8s or 4x10s
 

Certifications required: Will need to be able to get or already have a TWIC Card

Top Required Skills:

  • HSE certification
  • Control of work and referencing permits experience
  • Incident investigations experience
  • Auditing Experience

 

Soft Skill Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to lead, collaborate, or work effectively in a variety of teams, including multi-disciplinary teams

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • ASP or CSP certification would be a huge plus
  • Construction Safety Certification would be great if they had it

High-Level Project Overview:

This role works as a resource that can provide ad hoc safety support to various Project Construction (PC) Renewable Projects, as assigned by PC Safety and Renewables leadership, in a team environment to help solar renewables reach their safety goals. This role provides supplementary safety support to the site safety team during peak construction activities as well as acts in a capacity to provide added support to projects where EPC safety performance is not meeting Project Construction expectations. This position reports to the Manager of Safety but is matrixed to the site teams as deemed appropriate by the Manager of Safety or by safety conditions at a location. The position will be required within the VA/NC/OH footprint up to 75% of the time, depending on the need.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Sets the standard so that the renewables team and contractors working with Project Construction Renewables see safety as an imperative that cannot be sacrificed
  • Monitor safety programs to determine their adequacy including review of short- and long-term strategic safety planning and development
  • Interfaces in the field with field craft and supervision communicate, coach, and assist the staff to ensure that all safety expectations are understood and met
  • Ensure the  safety obligations are carried out as per the terms of the agreement, and communicated to the Site Asset Manager/Renewables Leadership/Power Generation Safety
  • Regularly audit Contractor & HSE Management Plan for compliance to ensure the alignment with project scope and conditions
  • Make notification to project staff of any contractor incidents in a timely manner
  • Identify best practices and continuous improvement initiatives and make these recommendations to the General Contractor to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices
  • Become familiar with General Contractor and subcontractor rules and make sure our team is familiar with these requirements
  • Receive reports from the Contractor and disperse them to management
  • Attend staff meetings, conference calls and report out on safety incidents, trends, and contractor safety performance.
  • Assist in addressing operations concerns and design issues by creating punch list items during start-up/commissioning
  • Meet with contractor safety staff to discuss safety deficiencies, findings, incidents
  • When needed participate in the investigation of incidents to determine root cause and corrective actions
  • Ensure the safety obligations of the Company are carried out as per the terms of the agreement, and communicated to the Project Manager
  • Take part in bi-weekly project safety calls to discuss project parameters and review any incidents that have occurred
  • Perform other safety-related duties as assigned by the site safety coordinator.

Field Duties:

  • Ensure Employees & contractors comply with all OSHA regulations, all other state/federal regulations, and Dominion Energy Safety Terms and Conditions (Solar and Battery Energy Storage).
  • Perform daily safety audits and inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance
  • For Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health items -stop the activity immediately and call the contractor safety team to take care of the issue in the manner prescribed contractually
  • For other compliance issues prioritize – get the contractor’s safety team and have them correct the issue. If the issue cannot be rectified immediately have the contractor’s safety team set a date to have the non-compliance item rectified and who is responsible for abating the issue. If that issue isn’t corrected in the prescribed time elevate the issue to the Project Manager
  • Attend Pre-Job Briefs (employee and contractor) to audit for quality as needed
  • Provide support to the project by maintaining a visible presence on the field and performing site visits to the entire project
  • Maintain professional relationship with Project Construction Renewables & contractor safety team
  • Serve as a mentor with Contractor safety professionals while in the field
  • Perform site walks with Renewable asset managers & contractor safety professionals to build relationships and identify hazards
  • Ensure contractors follow zero-tolerance safety expectations
  • Spend time in the field interacting with field personnel and coaching on safety concerns or call contractor safety personnel depending upon the issue

Mandatory Qualifications (Applicants must meet a minimum of one of the following):

  • A Bachelor in Safety or a closely related field with a minimum of 5 years of large project experience in a construction safety environment.
  • A current OSHA 500 training course designation and five years of experience as the lead safety professional.
  • A CHST designation & four years of construction safety experience as the lead professional.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have 1-3 years of experience serving in the role of an owner’s safety representative.
  • Have 1-3 years of experience in a utility/industrial environment.

Specific Companies/Industries Experience:

  • Experience in heavy lifting/civil projects or large construction projects
