Instrument Technician II (Gen) 

Air Emissions Monitoring Specialist 

Job Description 

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of CEMS/COMS operation, maintenance, and design (3-4 years) OR directly related work experience (3-4 years).
  • This working knowledge of CEMS/COMS is necessary to create Excess Emissions Reports, create Monitoring Plans, review Test Protocols, review Audit Reports, support CEMS/COMS equipment upgrades, and other reporting activities.
  • This role is responsible for providing technical support in continuous emissions measurement systems testing configuration and reporting to state and federal agencies.
  • This role performs routine to moderately complex work assignments and tasks with limited work supervision.
  • Under the client’s supervision, will perform technical calculations, analysis, research, and design to further develop professional knowledge and abilities to provide technical support.
  • This may include analyzing and evaluating systems, equipment, process improvements, and programs for assurance that they are modified, operated, and maintained under the client’s policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Drafts technical and audit reports to support findings or report events and develop compliance strategies as part of a team.
  • Success candidates may be required to observe/participate in emissions testing conducted from exhaust stack platforms at heights of up to 350 feet.

Top (At Least 3 IF Possible) Must Have Skill Sets (Technical/Functional) 

  • Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and understanding of applicable air regulations
  • Must be able to delve into the ESC Spectrum StackVision software and understand how to process the CEMS data
  • Technical writing/Professional writing- must be able to edit in MS Word and Adobe PDF and compile a report for submittal to EPA and state regulators

Top Nice-To-Have Skill Sets

  •  Familiar with Part 63 D & U (MATS and IBMACT) reporting requirements
  • Able to review air permits, CEMS monitoring plans, CEMS Audit Reports, and Stack Test Reports
  • Familiar with the USEPAs ECMPS and CDX databases
  • Good Note-taking for own benefit

Soft Skill Requirements:

  • Positive attitude and collaboration easily – this candidate will need significant training from team members.
  • Candidate will interface with other departments to gather necessary information and guidance regarding CEMS events.
  • Persistent – sometimes it takes a while to drill down and find solutions to issues.
  •  support the fossil Power Gen Stations

Education and Certifications/Licensures:

  • Bachelor of Science
  • B.S. in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry or similar

Specific Companies/Industries or Ideal Background:

  • Energy, utility, refinery, state department of env quality- air
