Staff Accountant – Financial Analyst
Description:
Astyra is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant–Financial Analyst to support a specialized cost settlement project for a state government agency. This position will analyze, review, reconcile, and report on financial activity to ensure transactions are accurate, properly documented, and compliant with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and agency procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze accounting transactions for accuracy and completeness before posting to the general ledger.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts, subsidiary ledgers, bank accounts, and other financial records.
- Research and resolve discrepancies involving payments, invoices, deposits, and account balances.
- Analyze unidentified or unapplied receipts and ensure funds are applied to the appropriate receivable invoices.
- Prepare and process deposits, adjusting journal entries, accounts payable transactions, and other financial activity in the agency’s financial systems.
- Compile, analyze, and reconcile federal grant expenditures for federal financial reporting.
- Monitor banking activity and identify transactions requiring additional research, correction, or follow-up.
- Support cost settlement activities by analyzing financial records, validating supporting documentation, and preparing reconciliation schedules.
- Prepare financial reports, spreadsheets, and supporting schedules to track account activity, discrepancies, and outstanding items.
- Identify financial trends, inconsistencies, and potential risks and communicate findings to appropriate team members.
- Collect, organize, and maintain documentation required to respond to audit inquiries.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and audit-ready records for financial transactions and adjustments.
- Collaborate with accounting, program, and administrative teams to obtain documentation and resolve financial issues.
- Follow state policies, internal controls, confidentiality requirements, and established accounting procedures.
- Perform additional financial analysis, reporting, and project-related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Significant knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Experience reviewing, analyzing, and reconciling financial transactions, general ledger accounts, and bank accounts.
- Experience with financial reporting, journal entries, cash application, accounts receivable, accounts payable, or related accounting functions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate and resolve complex financial discrepancies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial or accounting systems.
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, and documentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Skills/Knowledge/Experience:
- Government or public-sector accounting experience.
- Experience with federal grant reporting, cost settlements, financial audits, or large-scale reconciliation projects.
- Familiarity with state agency financial systems, policies, and internal controls.
