Staff Accountant – Fiscal Transaction Analyst

Astyra is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant with fiscal transaction and reconciliation experience to support a specialized cost settlement project for a state government agency. This position will assist with the research, reconciliation, application, and recording of financial transactions to ensure accuracy and compliance with established accounting procedures.
Responsibilities:

  • Apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) when reviewing and processing financial transactions.
  • Support cost settlement activities, including researching payment discrepancies and reconciling financial records.
  • Review unidentified or unapplied receipts and determine the appropriate receivable invoices for payment application.
  • Research discrepancies involving payments, invoices, deposits, and account balances.
  • Enter deposits, adjusting journal entries, accounts payable transactions, and other financial activity into the agency’s financial systems.
  • Perform account reconciliations and assist with resolving outstanding or unmatched transactions.
  • Review supporting documentation to ensure transactions are accurate, complete, and properly authorized.
  • Prepare spreadsheets, reports, and supporting schedules to track project activity and resolution status.
  • Collaborate with fiscal, program, and administrative teams to obtain information and resolve transaction issues.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with fiscal transactions, account reconciliation, cash application, accounts receivable, accounts payable, or general ledger activity.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to research and resolve financial discrepancies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other financial or accounting systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous government or public-sector accounting experience.
  • Experience supporting cost settlements, financial audits, or large-scale reconciliation projects.
  • Familiarity with state agency financial systems, policies, and internal controls.
